Here’s a recipe for a Vegetarian Chop Suey: Ingredients: 1 small or medium sized red onion, sliced 2-3 cloves of garlic, crushed 1 carrot, sliced 6 button mushrooms, sliced 1-1.5 cup Chinese cabbage, sliced 1/2 cup celery, sliced Snow peas, deveined salt and pepper to taste 1 tsp cooking oil 1 tbsp cornstarch dissolved in 1-1.5 cup water Instructions: Heat a pan or wok with cooking oil. Then, saute onions and garlic until lightly brown. Add carrots and mushrooms. Saute for about 1 minute. Then, add celery and cabbage. Saute for another 1 minute. Add cornstarch with water mixture. Mix well. Then, add snow peas. Add salt and pepper to taste. Allow vegetables to cook for a few minutes. Don’t leave it too long (depending on the heat, amount of vegetables you use, etc. – 5-15 minutes should do), as you don’t want it all to be soggy. So, there you go. An easy, yummy meal that’s best served with white jasmine rice.

I love barbecues and grills. That’s why I’m forever experimenting with marinades. So, recently, I tried a ‘made up’ (er, I didn’t copy any recipe; so yes, it’s original) marinade for a pork barbecue. Here are the ingredients that I used in the marinade: - 2 tbsp light soy sauce
- 2 tbsp vinegar
- 1 tsp dried rosemary
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp red chilli powder (optional)
- 1 small onion, cut in to wedges
- 1 tsp garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup tocino mix or brown sugar
- salt and/or pepper to taste
I mixed all these ingredients with 1/2 kilo of cubed lean pork in a square ceramic pan. Then, I covered the pan with cling wrap and put the mix in the fridge overnight. When I was ready to grill it, I just put them in the steel skewers. You can also use the wooden/bamboo skewers, if you prefer. This mix should be enough for about 12 skewers of pork BBQ. If you want to use an outdoor grill (gas, wood, or coal), it should be okay too. But, for this, I used my beloved Breville Grill. Hubby’s verdict: Finished 6 out of 8 skewers of this grilled pork barbecue. Good one. Suggested Dip: Vinegar with Chillis
